How To Improve Your AC Efficiency

The air conditioning in your home is one of the primary systems that make your home livable across the year's four seasons. Without the modern AC’s ability to create an internal climate within your home, it would be hard to endure the heat of summer.

The AC uses an enormous amount of energy to do its work. Your home's air conditioning and heating systems account for up to 46% of your total energy use. But this energy usage is not always the direct result of how the AC works.

Air conditioning systems may use more energy than they are supposed to because of how they are used. As DraperRealty.net advises, how you maintain your AC plays a huge role in how well it uses energy. The surroundings of the AC also impact its energy use.

It costs much money to keep the air conditioning running. You don’t want to increase that cost by doing avoidable things that increase the operational cost of your AC. What can you do to improve the energy efficiency of your air conditioning?

How to improve your AC’s energy efficiency

          1. Buying the correct AC

The type of AC you buy plays a role in the efficiency of your AC. As a rule, wall-mounted units are more efficient than window-mounted units because cool air drops; the higher position of a wall-mounted unit means better air circulation.

The Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio (SEER) value of your AC also matters. The minimum SEER value you should go for is 13. A SEER value of more than 13 equals greater efficiency and a longer lifespan.

Another factor is the size of the AC. If the unit is too large, you get short cycling conditions; this will impair the AC’s efficiency. If the unit is too small, it will work too hard to cool the room.

          2. Placement of indoor and outdoor units

The placement of your AC is one of the best things you can do to improve it. For window units, it is important not to place them in a window that gets direct sunlight. Another thing to think of when placing window units is to position them in a place where it can get maximum airflow. Split units have fewer issues when it comes to placement due to their position at the top of the room. But the position of the outdoor unit does matter.

          3. Poor airflow

If your AC can’t breathe, it will use more energy since it will work harder to cool your home. Many things interfere with the airflow around an AC. The AC air vents may be blocked by furniture, artwork, or curtains.

Outdoor units may have plants growing too close to them (outdoor units need around three feet of space around them). If the air filter is clogged, you will also have problems with AC efficiency and higher energy bills.

          4. No or inadequate maintenance

Regular maintenance of the air conditioning improves efficiency and saves money. Changing the air filter regularly and cleaning the AC to get rid of dirt on the coils and condenser are just two steps you need to take regularly.

Keeping debris away from the outdoor unit will also help the AC run better. An often-forgotten aspect of AC maintenance is duct cleaning. If you maintain the AC but neglect the ducts, you will not solve your energy-efficiency problems.

          5. Use alternate cooling methods

There is no need to use the AC in the evening when it is cooler. In most homes, using a fan or the fan settings on the AC will provide enough airflow to keep the home comfortable. Also, when it is warmer, you can use a fan with your AC during the day. The fan circulates air inside the room to reduce the workload on the AC while also improving cooling and energy efficiency.

          6. The wrong temperature set point

The right thermostat setting for the AC depends on the season of the year. How hard your AC works depends on the difference between the temperature setting you programmed into the thermostat and the temperature levels outside your home.

If you can, try to avoid maintaining a temperature below 76 F for long periods. Set the temperature lower when you are home and increase it by 1-2 degrees when you are away.

          7. Know when not to use the AC

Using the AC while using a heat-generating device, oven, cooktop, or hairdryer is not a good idea. The heat generated by the device cancels any cooling achieved by the AC. If you use a heat-generating device, it is best to use a cooling fan or the fan settings on your AC. Also, do not use the AC if the outside temperature is 65F or less. This is because the refrigerant inside the AC needs to warm up, and it will be hard to do that when the outside temperature is too low.

          What’s The Right Answer?

When I leave a room I’m always careful to turn off the light. I even, finally, have the kids trained to turn them off as well. It saves money, right? It makes sense, “Not using it, turn it off.”

Should I Close The Vents? Isn’t The Same As Asking, Should I Turn Off a Light Bulb

It seems like closing off the vents in the rooms that your not currently using also makes good sense. However, the reality is a bit more complex than that.

Closing off the vents seems like it should be saving energy. That means saving money. I mean why should I heat or cool rooms that have no one in them when I could close the vents instead?

Closed Vents and Air Pressure 101

Despite the logic, it’s a big misconception that closing the vents in unused rooms will save energy. The reality is it can actually waste more energy than just letting the system operate normally. When you close the vents in unused rooms it does save air, and therefore, energy from entering the room. But it pushes all that excess air to other places in your home.

Mini Split Systems Can Give You Control Over Unused Spaces

No matter how many vents you have open in your home, the heater and air conditioning system will produce the same amount of air. So, with some vents closed the pressure inside of the ducts themselves can increase. This added pressure can easily cause leaks in the ductwork. Leaky ducts cause long term and very unnecessary energy waste.

Air leaks in the ducts actually make your system work harder trying to make your home comfortable. A system working harder than it should uses more energy and will most likely have a shorter life span than it could have.

          Balance Is The Key

Your heating and air conditioning system works most efficiently when the air delivery to each room is balanced. If your system was installed correctly in the beginning, then a great effort was put into determining the correct size and placement of those ducts. They were designed to deliver balanced comfort. Closing vents will mess up that balance. The system just can’t work like it was designed to work.

          Managing Air Flow Efficiently

If you feel like cutting off heating and cooling to certain parts of your home or business is the best answer, a zoned HVAC system is probably the best way to do that. The simplest types of systems are known as Mini Split Systems. They do a great job allowing you to control the temperature in all the sections of your living spaces.

Lawton Firefighters are known to go far above and beyond for our Lawton community in saving lives. And now they were asking for the same for one of their own. They were asking for blood.

After an injury in April, firefighter Scott Preston was at the brink of death. He started developing blood clots from his feet all the way up. While he was in the hospital he began experiencing more complications. He suffered a muscle tear which caused internal bleeding. Scott was in dire need of blood. He needed 13 units to be exact.

His wife Monique Preston, says that at one point they didn’t know if Scott would make it through the night. Monique said “All I did was start reaching out and asking for prayers.”

Scott made it through surgery with a 50 percent chance of surviving the next 48 hours. But, survive he did.

After Scott was released from the hospital, the Lawton Police Department escorted him home parade style.

The blood drive was a success. We were proud to have been a part of it.

When Does My Air Conditioning System Needs Repairing?

How Do I Know If My Air Conditioning System Needs Repairing?

There are some very definite symptoms

You may not suspect anything is wrong with your air conditioning unit as it silently hums in the background while cooling your home. Often, the only time you realize that your air conditioning system needs repairing and that something is wrong is when it completely stops functioning at all.

This is definitely true as the warmer Southwest Oklahoma months sneak up on you. It’s already close to May. Oklahoma usually goes from really cold winter to triple digits in a very short amount of time.

The first thing that gets noticed is just a simple lack of cold air when the unit is first used. Sometimes it’s other unusual behavior from your otherwise, trustworthy air conditioning unit.

If anything unusual is noticed in any way with your system it’s time to call the trained professionals at Bill Miller and Noble Heating and Air Conditioning.

Some Common Signs That Your Air Conditioning System Needs Repairing

A few of the most common

There are many things that might go wrong with your Air Conditioning System. This is especially true if you don’t have the system regularly serviced. And admittedly most of us don’t pay a great amount of attention to our systems until they break down.

Know The Warning Signs Before Problems Escalate.

          Absence of Cool Air

When the system is not properly maintained on a yearly basis, your air conditioning unit’s ability to provide cool air slows down or greatly diminishes. You may notice that even if it’s set to full blast, you just don’t get cold air like before. When this happens, just give Bill Miller and Noble a call, because this is almost always serious. It might mean that the compressor has failed. It might mean that the level of refrigerant, called Freon, has gotten too low for the system to work right. You can trust Bill Miller and Noble to check the unit and to provide you with the right solution.

Weak Air Flow From The Vents

Is the airflow from the vents of the air conditioning system weak? Is there very little air coming out? The problem could actually be with the compressor. Low pressure in the system can cause the fins in the air handler to freeze over. This restricts airflow.

Do some rooms or areas in your home of offices have cooler or warmer air than other areas? The problem might be with the ductwork. This is a very definite sign your system needs immediate repair. You can’t put this problem off.

          Unusual Leaks or Moisture

Leaks and moisture near or maybe around your air conditioning unit’s closet is a sign that there is a problem with the unit. It might be due to the refrigerant being low. A refrigerant leak can pose serious health risks to everyone in your home. That is more important now than ever before with the current lockdown conditions arriving from COVID-19 Crisis. Call an expert technician right away if you suspect that this might be the cause of your problem.

Does the area near your air conditioner suddenly has water pools? That is a sign that the drain tube may be clogged. The Drain tube removes the condensation from the unit to the outside of the home. It may be blocked or it may be restricted. Although this is not as serious a problem as a refrigerant leak, you may still need a qualified professional technician. If you continue to have water leaking you may develop mold problems. If you have wooden floors you may end up with substantial, expensive floor damage.

Faulty Thermostat In Your Home or Office

Are some parts of your home or office warmer or cooler than other parts? That may only mean that there is a problem with your thermostat. Call a technician promptly to fix the issue. Everyone in your home should be comfortable in any part of your home. This is a much better problem to have than damaged ducts.

          Unfamiliar Odors

Foul or pungent smells from the vents of your air conditioner usually will indicate burned wire insulation. If the odor is a bit musty, it may mean that there’s mold growth either in the ductwork or inside the unit itself. This problem should also be fixed right away to prevent physical problems and health problems from developing. Mold is a very dangerous hazard in your home.

Unusual Sounds From the Air Conditioning System

When the Heating and Air Conditioning System is working properly, you will barely notice any sounds coming from it. Consequently, if there are strange or maybe unusual noises from the unit, it probably means that something is wrong with the unit.

A grinding, grating, or squealing sound coming from the unit means that something needs to be fixed internally right away. Worn out motor bearings will usually make a grinding sound. A squeaky sound may be a just loose and slipping belt.

Is Your Air Conditioner Leaking Water?

Does Your Air Conditioner Leak Water?

Here’s why, and what you can do about it.

Does it seem like your air conditioner is leaking water? Is the carpet around the indoor unit’s closet is wet? Does the floor inside the closet feel wet?

Virtually every home is Southwestern Oklahoma has air conditioning. The summers here can be quite oppressive, not to mention the humidity. Removing humidity from the air is one of the air conditioning system’s major jobs.

An air conditioner leaking water can cause extensive expensive floor damage.

With almost everyone in the community quarantined in their homes, the air conditioning systems can be worked harder than they ever have. That will only be more so as the heat of summer draws near.

But what does this all have to do with a water leak from my air conditioning system?

And if it is leaking some now, do you want to know what it means and how you can fix it?

Of course. Water leaking onto a floor is never good. If it is a wooden subfloor, very extensive damage can be had that requires replacing sections of the floor. Even with a concrete foundation, water on the floor can cause the carpet to mold and need to be replaced.

Molds in a home from water intrusion can be a very serious health hazard that the air conditioner’s filter system may not fully handle. Molds in the ductwork may cause the ducts to need cleaning.

OK, Why Is My Air Conditioner System Leaking Water?

Here are some of the most common reasons why you may start noticing water coming from the air conditioner

First, You May Have A Clogged Condensate Line

The most common problem cause of air conditioner leaks in because your unit has a clogged condensate drain line. As the unit removes humidity from the air, it collects on the air handler fins. This water then collects in a tray and is piped to the outside of the home.

The air conditioner condensate line can also accumulate dust and dirt that passes through it. Over time, they mix with the drain water and head down the pipe. This mixture can stick to the walls of the pipe and form a slimy sludge that may restrict the flow of condensate in the pipe. When this happens enough, the water is prevented from getting to the outside of the home. The final result is the water backs up and leaks into the air handler’s closet and out on the floor.

Second, The Air Conditioner Doesn’t Have Enough Refrigerant

This gets technical. If the air conditioning system loses refrigerant for some reason, the loss of refrigerant can cause low pressure in the system. When this starts to happen, you notice it first when the temperature of the vent air is not quite as cold as before.

Also, too low a pressure can cause the evaporator coils in the air handler to freeze up. Ice on the coils lowers the airflow through the coils. When the closet eventually gets warm the melted ice can overwhelm the drain system and the excess may leak onto the floor.

The unit needs to be charged and the leak found and repaired. That’s when you definitely need to give us a call.

Third, The Air Filter Accumulated Too Much Dirt

Another common reason why your AC begins dripping water is because of the air filter. Accumulated dirt can stop the filter from doing its job and prevent it from supplying power to another vital part of the air conditioning unit, the evaporator coils.

Like not having enough refrigerant, a dirty air filter can cause the coils to freeze over. This time around though, it’s because of lack of adequate airflow across the coils. Without air flowing through it, the evaporator unit gets too cold and freezes up once again.

We don’t want the evaporator coils freezing up for any reason. Freezing can cause damage to other parts of the system. The damage it causes can sometimes be irreparable and lead to installing a new AC unit instead.

Lastly, The Drain Pan Got Rusted or Just Damaged.

Damaged or rusted drain pans is a common case for old air conditioning units. If you’re faced with one that’s cracked, then you’re fortunate. It’s easier to fix than a rusted one as you can use sealants to solve the problem.

A rusted drain pan is a bit of a more complex job, though. It means the rust ate through the metal and there’s not much there to work with anymore. Often, drain pans with this kind of problem have a bunch of holes for water to fall through. It’s a clear sign of an older system that probably really should be completely replaced. Older systems can have a much higher operating cost than a newer, more efficient system.

Unlike most of the problems here on the list though, drain pans aren’t too bad to fix. Replacement is the most common solution to this problem. What’s great about these is that they’re cheap compared to other parts of the AC unit. However, some system designs may require the removal of the unit. That’s serious and indicates that it may be time, again, for a full system replacement.

So, What Can I Do About All Of This?

Is your air conditioner leaking more water than the last time you checked? If it is, don’t despair! There are still some ways for you to fix your air conditioning unit yourself. Of course, it’s best to schedule a service call and let a professional inspect the entire system.

For the safety of our customers and our team,

we have implemented some new procedures to run a clean service call on your home.

Here are some guidelines that you can be assured of as our technicians enter your home for a service call:

          • All employees who are feeling ill or are living with someone that is ill, will remain home.

          • For technicians and office employees that come to work, temperatures will be taken before they enter the office.

          • Before we dispatch a technician, our office will be asking each homeowner to make sure that no one is sick in the home.

          • Technicians will carry Lysol in their trucks and will wipe down the truck daily.

          • You will receive a call notifying you that the technician is parked outside your home. Please be ready to open your door so our technician can begin work.

          • Technicians will arrive at your home wearing a mask (if requested).

          • Technicians will not shake hands with homeowners and will practice social distancing (6 feet).

          • Our technician will keep his tools outside and will do their best to minimize the time in your home.

          • We will not distribute paper invoices. All materials will be emailed to you. Please be sure to provide the technician with a valid e-mail.

Times They Are A-Changin’ – Electronic Payments

With this new “normal” we are embracing every day, we are relying heavily on technology to keep us connected and moving forward.

Social distancing is now at the top of our minds when we interacting with others and has wiggled its way into how we must interact moving forward.

This is especially important when it comes to collecting payments. We are an essential industry that can put us in close contact with others, though not necessarily.
